Saturday, the 6th of April 2013 - The week-long Governors’ conference ended with a vow by the county heads to fight any efforts by the central government or from any other quarters to torpedo the new devolved system of government.
The ‘Governors v. the Central Government’ issue was kicked off earlier this week when out-going President Mwai Kibaki told the Governor’s conference that Kenya is still a ‘single unitary state.’
This has prompted the Governors to form an 11-member committee to settle any differences with the National Government and also to address their salary concerns with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
“We will not succumb to the culture of fear and the conspiracy of silence,” he said.
“This committee will engage on various pertinent issues like the salary structure of the county governments,” he added.
His sentiments were echoed by Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma;
“We wanted Governors represented in the negotiations with Ministries.”
