Tuesday 16th April 2013 - Two children have died and three more people injured as heavy rains pounded Makueni over the weekend. The two, aged three and nine died in Kilungu district on Saturday night.

Area Police Chief Philip Ouma said the two, who are in pre-unit and standard three at a local primary school, went to bed at their main house and left the parents in the kitchen.
They were buried alive when the walls of their house caved in following the rains that have pounded the region since Friday.

Their bodies were taken to Kilungu Nursing Home mortuary.

In the second incident, a family of three is nursing injuries at Kilome Nursing Home after a land slide buried their house.

The mother and her two children suffered severe injuries after their house collapsed as they slept on Saturday night. They were saved by villagers who rushed them to hospital.

Meanwhile, floods have damaged property and roads in Kilome, Kiboko and Kitise areas. The bridge that links Kiangini with Kitise was swept off by the Muvuoni stream after it burst its banks.

Passengers travelling to and from the areas had to postpone their engagements after the Kilome-Uvete earth road was washed away. At Kiboko area, river Maangi-Uvungu burst the banks and flooded Kiboko town along the Mombasa- Nairobi highway.

Area Chief George Maleve said shop owners have incurred heavy losses after their stores were submerged.
