Monday the 15th of April 2013 - British oil exploration firm Tullow Oil has today revealed that one of Kenya’s six oil wells has been producing 281 barrels of oil a day (281 bopd) in test drills conducted to determine the commercial viability of the oil.

Tullow oil released the results of the test drills through a statement on its official website. The statement read in part;

"At the Ngamia-1 well in Block 10BB in Kenya, the first of six drill stem tests has now been completed. The test was carried out in the Lower Lokhone formation. The well flowed 281 barrels of 30 degree API oil per day using a Progressive Cavity Pump," read the statement in part.

The statement further added that the drill tests at Ngamia-1 well in Block 10BB are ‘very encouraging’;

“The results from the first flow test at Ngamia are also very encouraging and prove the first potentially commercial flow from the Lower Lokhone reservoir section. The remaining tests in the Auwerwer reservoir units will give us a fuller indication of Ngamia’s production potential.”

In February, Tullow revealed that a similar testing drill at Twiga South-1 well had produced 2,812 barrels of oil per day (2,812 bopd). At the time the British oil firm said that the well had the potential to produce 5,200 barrels of oil per day (5,200 bopd).
