Tuesday 16th April 2013 - Learning may be disrupted next term at a school in Embu after a storm on Friday night plucked off the roof of an entire school and two latrines. The downpour and strong winds also pulled down trees and banana plantations.

Karumiri DEB Thau Primary School had all the classrooms’ roofs pulled off by heavy rainstorms.  Speaking to the media, the head teacher, Nyagah Gakando, said that he estimates the damage caused by the rains to be over Sh1 million.

He said pupils were lucky since the school was to close the following  day for the April holidays and expressed concern that if the roof is not replaced by the time the school re-opens, pupils will study under trees.

The head teacher asked well wishers and the department of education to intervene. The school accommodates 500 pupils all of whom have been affected by the incident.

Gakando said parents are not cash crop farmers and rely on short season crops like beans hence cannot afford to pay for the damages.
