Thursday, May 23, 2019- Larry Madowo, who is the BBC Africa Business Editor has left Kenyans talking after he ate a mouse from a street vendor in Malawi.

Madowo is currently covering the elections in Malawi and his team took some time engage a vendor selling fried mice by the roadside.


After trying the fried mouse which is a apparently a popular delicacy in Malawi, Madowo wrote:


"I ate a mouse for the first time and it was, well, amazing!"


"They’re eaten whole with the skin and everything. It tastes just like chicken."




According to the locals, the mice are gutted, boiled in plain water for about half an hour and salted. They are then fire dried until they are nearly bone dry”

Thursday May 23, 2019-Embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has finally been arrested in connection to mega corruption scandals in his county.

Detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)arrested Waititu after conducting coordinated raids on his homes. 


After the raid on his Runda residence, the county head was bundled into the EACC van and taken to Integrity Centre for questioning.


The detectives took away records relating to contracts issued by the Governor as well as some number plates found in the boot of his Toyota Prado.


Earlier in the morning, the sleuths had stormed two of his Nairobi homes in a 6-hour operation to gather evidence.


The detectives searched his homes in Runda and Garden Estate for documents in connection to corruption in Kiambu County Government. 


15 other county officials are also targeted in the ongoing investigations involving billions of shillings.

Thursday May 23, 2019-Amani National Congress (ANC) Leader Musalia Mudavadi has received a huge boost in his quest to becoming President in 2022 after retirement of Uhuru Kenyatta.

This is after Mt. Kenya vowed to die with him in the 2022 Presidential contest, saying they owe no one any political debt.


Led by former Gatanga MP Humphrey Njuguna, the Kikuyus told Mudavadi that they will not be interested in the Presidency come 2022 and that he should come closer to President Uhuru Kenyatta who will leave the seat for him when he retires.


“We need someone who will revamp the economy and tame the runaway theft that we are witnessing now and you fit the bill,” Njuguna told Mudavadi.


“When the leadership of any nation is inept, all key pillars of the nation crumble down. We should rethink the direction of this country now than never before,” he added.


His sentiments were echoed by Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba who said Mudavadi is the only leader acceptable across the country and therefore the best bet for President.

Thursday, May 23, 2019-Celebrated writer, Binyavanga Wainana, lost his life on Tuesday around 10PM after suffering a stroke.

The 2002 Caine Prize winner has been in and out of the hospital since 2015.


He even flew to India for specialized medication after his condition worsened but his battle with stroke claimed his life on Tuesday.


Last year in January, Binyanga talked about  his death in an emotional post.


The controversial writer said that he doesn’t fear death anymore and further told his friends, fans and relatives that  when he dies, he doesn’t want people  to mourn him.


He wants his life to be celebrated not to be mourned.

Thursday May 23, 2019-A vocal campus politician has hinted on writing to Deputy President William Ruto to pick her as his running mate in the build-up to 2022 presidential campaigns.

Saadia Nimo, a third-year Bachelor of Education Arts student at the Garissa University,  says she wants to be the first ever female Deputy President in Kenya and Africa come the next general elections.



Speaking during the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) mentorship program held at the Garissa University, Nimo claimed that Ruto was the man to watch and that she would be part of his 'winning' team. 



On her ambition of becoming DP Ruto's running mate, she hinted that she would formally write to him requesting to be considered as he does not know her at a personal level.



"Ruto doesn't know me but I know him as a powerful and dedicated leader. I will formally write to him to be considered in his list of preferred running mates. Who knows I could be the first ever female Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya," Nimo stated.

Thursday May 23, 2019-Self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) general, Miguna Miguna, has sensationally claimed that Ford Kenya party leader, Moses Wetangula, cannot be arrested and charged over the fake gold scam. 


Commenting on social media on Thursday, Miguna said that Wetangula is a partner in crime with President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Amolo Odinga. 


He noted that the senator has engineered several mega scandals in the government but he is yet to be found guilty of any of them. 


According to Miguna, as long as Uhuru and Raila remain together, the fight against corruption will not be successful.


“Moses Wetang'ula's top 5 scams: Sold Tokyo and Abuja Embassies, Grabbed Turkana Oil Blocks. Grabbed @EACCKenya Building, Stole Shs. 30 Billion UAE Gold, BAT Bribery. Toyota Landcruiser V8 stolen at Central Police Station found at a house in Ngong, the thugs were selling it at Ksh 6.5 Million(PHOTOs)

Thursday, May 23, 2019-A Toyota Landcruiser V8 that had been stolen at Central Police Station has been recovered.

Detectives from the Flying Squad unit recovered the guzzler at  a house in Ngong, Kajiado County.


The Landcruiser which was initially white in colour had been repainted black.


Four suspects identified as Zacharia Maina, Stephen Ndungu, Francis Karuthi and James Kamau were arrested during the raid.


The 4 suspects are said to be part of a gang that has been stealing vehicles and then dismantling the parts before selling them.


According to police, the suspects were planning to change the vehicle’s number plate from the original KBX 449 A to KCL 390P.


They were selling the stolen guzzler to unsuspecting customer for Ksh 6.5 Million before they were nabbed  by flying squad detectives.

Thursday May 23, 2019-Deputy President William Ruto has revealed what will make him retire from active politics in 2022. 

Speaking during a Thursday morning interview with Kameme FM, Ruto stated that the courts are the only ones with the power to stop him from vying for the presidency in 2022. 


He explained that he was ready to retire with President Uhuru Kenyatta if the court rules in favour of former Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe, who sought interpretation on whether the DP is part of the Presidency and should, therefore, retire with President Uhuru Kenyatta.


He noted that he was not hell-bent on becoming President, saying even if he lost the Jubilee party ticket to contest the country's top seat, he would support the winner.


According to the DP, he would humbly form the Opposition if he will not make it to State House without causing trouble as has been a habit of Kenya's election losers.

Thursday May 23,2019-Deputy President William Ruto has finally put to rest the debate over his source of millions he contributes in Harambees across the country every weekend.

For the last 6 years, Ruto’s generosity has been questioned by a section of opposition leaders, who have argued that the money he gives almost on a weekly basis exceeds his monthly salary.


However speaking on Thursday on Kameme FM, the DP said that apart from being a public officer, he has been in business for 30 years, hence his ability to raise such funds.


Ruto said that some of the money comes from many friends who choose to stand with him in giving towards the construction of churches and other initiatives.


"Mimi nimekuwa mfanyabiashara kwa zaidi ya miaka thelathini. Ni vile siwezi anza kutangaza eti niko na kampuni fulani na fulani. Pia niko na marafiki kadhaa. (I have been in business for over 30 years. It is only that i cannot start saying i own this and this company. I also have many friends)," Ruto said.


He also lashed out his critics, terming them bitter with him and only using the fundraiser issue as a political excuse to get to him.


National Super Alliance (NASA) leader, Raila Odinga and Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader, Musalia Mudavadi are among opposition leaders who have been questioning the DP source of millions.

Thursday May 23, 2019-Deputy President William Ruto has finally given former Prime Minister Raila Odinga something to celebrate about after he announced his readiness to concede defeat in the much anticipated 2022 presidential race, which he has already declared interest in.

Speaking on Thursday, Ruto said that he will not make any move to challenge the presidential results in the instance that he suffers a loss.




He added that he will peacefully join the Opposition and will not subject Kenyans to court petitions or demonstrations.


"Mungu akiniwezesha kama nitakuwa candidate, tukishindwa tutaenda upinzani. Hatutahangaisha wakenya na kesi, maandamano ama swearing in. (If God enables me to be the Jubilee candidate in 2022, if we lose, we will accept, we won't go to court, demonstrate or do fake swearing-ins, we will join the Opposition)," he said.


The nation's leading problem are politicians who cannot accept defeat. The other are political conmen whose main intention is to fool Kenyans)," he added.

Safaricom extends BOB COLLYMORE’s tenure by one year amidst fierce succession politics.

Thursday, May 23, 2019- Safaricom has extended the tenure of CEO Bob Collymore for 12 months.

Collymore was set to leave thetrillion shilling company in August 2019 but he has been given one more year to compensate for the time he was away on health grounds.


Mr. Collymore took a nine month leave in late 2017 to seek for specialized treatment in London after he was diagnosed witha rare cancer of the blood called Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)


In a candid interview on the JKL Show, Collymore, who resumed his duties as the boss of the giant Telecommunication Company in August 2018, admitted that he’s lucky to be alive.




He said: “When I was finally diagnosed in London, the doctor told me that I probably had it for about 6 months. Being diagnosed with cancer for me was not such a big deal and a lot of people seem to think that is a bit strange.


“But I was really upset when they told me that it was going to take 9 months. I was like are you crazy? There is a company that has to be managed back at home and a family to take care of,”


“It would have killed me if I was not diagnosed early. Because AML becomes fatal within weeks and month. It would have killed me by Christmas, I would have been ex-Safaricom CEO,"


The announcement comes amidst intense lobbying for the next CEO to be a Kenyan.

Under Collymore, Safaricom has grown to be the most valuable company at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), worth over Ksh 1.1 trillion.

Thursday May 23, 2019-Deputy President William Ruto has complained to President Uhuru Kenyatta that the poultry deal he signed with Uganda is making losses for him. 

This is after a Kenyan named Andrew texted Kameme FM during Ruto's interview to protest that the high number of cheap eggs from Uganda was causing a detrimental effect on his business and the DP responded that they shared the same problem. 


"What Andrew is saying is true and I'm not only hearing it from him. I am a poultry farmer and I understand what he's saying. I have also made losses because the eggs coming from Uganda are way cheaper than those produced in Kenya," Ruto empathized.


The DP noted that he has raised the issue with Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri to safeguard the Kenyan farmers.


"I have talked to CS Kiunjuri (Agriculture) not as the DP but as a farmer, telling him that he must find a way to safeguard Kenyan farmers from the negative effects of the deal," he added.


DP Ruto explained that the cost of production in Kenya is expensive due to the high cost of chicken feeds, thus increasing the price of the eggs.

Thursday, May 23, 2019-A suicide bomber wearing a suicide vest was wrestled to the ground and detained in Guri El Town, Central Somali.

According to a Somali journalist, the suicide bomber tried to blow himself up at a parade to commemorate a group of Somali  fighters who died fighting the dreaded  terror group,  Al-Shabaab.


He was heading towards the VIP area where senior Government officials were seated   before he was intercepted.

Thursday May 23, 2019 - Malindi MP, Aisha Jumwa, has once again made an announcement that will surprise Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga, and his lieutenants.


On Wednesday, Jumwa, who is an ODM rebel, announced that she is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in International Leadership and Governance at the International Leadership University and hopes to succeed Kilifi Governor, Amason Kingi, in 2022.


“The ambition is there, I will vie in Kilifi County come 2022 to work for my people,” the vocal MP said.


The 43 year old suggested that she has always wanted to run for Governor since 2015 and she says the vision is closer to reality.

“It's time to take a bigger responsibility for the people of Kilifi,” she says.


“I was the first woman to be elected under the new Constitution as the Woman MP of Kilifi, then I shifted the goalpost to a single constituency and won as well.”

“I feel I have something big to offer, thus my resolve,” Jumwa said.


This is a big surprise to Raila Odinga and his orphans because they expelled Jumwa from ODM hoping that she will fall politically.


The MP was expelled for supporting Deputy President William Ruto’s Presidential bid in 2022.
